[GUIDE] Taking/Giving Critiques Empty [GUIDE] Taking/Giving Critiques

Post by Michelle Fri Sep 03, 2010 11:15 am

A small guide on people taking or giving critiques.
You can choose to or not to follow it, whatever you feel is best for you. It's just a guide anyway.
This can be applied anywhere, from GM applications to the graphics section.
    1. People’s critiques.
Do you thank them? Or do you ignore them?
Do you feel angry or upset? Do you feel frustrated?

You shouldn’t get angry or upset with the comments, or the person who wrote it. They wrote it for a reason. To help you. What do they gain anyway?

Of course, we all do feel embarrassed and frustrated at some point in time, because you put in so much effort, only to find out people are criticizing you. So it doesn’t really help if you sit there and get angry over it. And there are better ways to respond.

3 types of responses that will make you look like an idiot.
    (a) making excuses.
    (b) fighting back.
    (c) posting for the wrong reasons.

    Making excuses.
We all make excuses. Who doesn’t?
“This is my style!” or whatever.
Nobody really cares if it is your style. Everyone has their own style.
You are posting for a reason, to appeal to the public.
    Therefore, your argument is invalid.

    Fighting back.
This, will not only embarrass you more, but also make you feel more angry.
What’s the point? It just makes you feel insecure.
You post for the world to see. Not only to fish for compliments.
People commenting are just trying to help.

    Posting for the wrong reasons.
    You don’t post for compliments.
Obviously it’s ok if you don’t want any critiques once in a while.
But not accepting them doesn’t make you grow.
    It’s just hurting yourself.

    2. Your critiques.
    What is your goal/motive?
Do you really want to help them? Or do you just want to hurt them?

    Helping them would be good.
Hurting them will only make you feel like a piece of shit.

3 types of critiques you will normally give.
    (a) getting revenge.
    (b) difference between “harsh” and “hate”.
    (c) sugarcoating.

    Getting revenge.
    The title says it all.
For example, if Mr.A gives Mr.B a harsh but true critique, and Mr.B doesn’t like it, and goes to Mr.A and gives in rude critiques in return, and most of them don’t even make sense.
This does not make Mr.B look good at all, and this can start a war, which I know all of us here don’t want.

    Difference between “harsh” and “hate”.
“THIS SUCKS!” and “This could use some underlining of keywords, etc…” are very different.
The first one doesn't help anyone at all
Even though getting a harsh critique isn't always pleasant, but something must be done.

    Sugarcoating.
It makes the person feel happy for a good second, but does it really help?
The last thing the person needs is a huge ego and the mindset that he/she does not need to improve.
I'm not saying not to give these comments, I'm saying not to do it as much as some people do.

    3. Viewers.
    Do not get involved.

    Taking sides.
Saying, "WTF, HER/HIS WORK IS PERFECT. YOU'RE WRONG. GTFO NOW AND DIE" is obviously dumb.
Once again, you’re just making the person feel that he/she is right in a case when he/she clearly isn't.

I can take critiques well, but I cannot give perfect critiques.
Not perfect, as in, I will sometimes lead to the "hate" part. idk why T_T

0_0 Nice thread but I guess it only applies to those 12 or 13 year olds who can't control anger. This seems like something they post in a school handbook. Shocked

Lol. WIN! I laughed at this post though. Reading through it, I pictured alot of people I knew in high school. The little cliques and everything, where everyone thought they were cool. Or "Cool is being over rated, so we're emo!" and the bunch.
